John 1:1-4 (NIV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Did you ever have mom or dad hunt for monsters under the bed or in the closet? It was important for them to come into the room and “scare” the monsters away or to make sure they were not present. Jesus was the same. Yes, Jesus came into our room to make sure we had lives safe from harm. God created us and then came into our room to be human like us and to scare away all of the monsters.
Mom and dad were not merely monster hunters, though. They also cured the problem of darkness. Our bedrooms were too dark, weren’t they? Mom and Dad, therefore, gave us night lights. What a relief! The light brightened the room, and we were instantly comforted.
Jesus was just like that night light. He came into the darkness and gave us light in a dark world. His light is better though, it never runs out of batteries! Nothing can be moved in front of it to shadow the room, no, His light cannot be turned off.
During Advent, we celebrate Jesus’ monster hunting and night light shining. What a gift!
